Indigenous Land and African Ancestral Acknowledgement

We begin by acknowledging that we are gathered on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, who have cared for these lands since time immemorial. We recognize the ongoing legacy of colonialism and honour the resilience and contributions of Indigenous communities past, present, and future.

As we continue to work towards justice, we recognize the importance of remembering that the land we stand on holds immense significance for Indigenous peoples and serves as a reminder of their ongoing connection to their culture, traditions, and identity. It is our responsibility to educate ourselves about the histories and current realities of Indigenous peoples, recognize their sovereignty, and actively support their rights.

We also acknowledge the African diaspora and the struggles, resilience, and contributions of Black communities throughout history. We acknowledging our shared lasting impact of slavery and colonization on Black communities across the globe. We recognize our strength, resilience, resistance, and ingenuity of African ancestors who were forcibly brought to these land through the transatlantic slave trade and who have continued to thrive in spite of systemic oppression.
